老人修仙传: A Cultivation Simulation Game for Learning Chinese

A small in-browser game inspired by 凡人修仙传 — a life-simulation where you cultivate from a hundred-year-old man all the way to godhood. Speak or type the right Chinese words to unlock each episode, and connect your voice with fellow cultivators in a shared room.

Everyone knows 凡人修仙传 — the mortal who claws his way to immortality one careful breakthrough at a time. But what if the journey did not start with a gifted teenager? What if it started with an old man, one hundred years old, hands shaking, who simply refused to accept that his story was over?

That is 老人修仙传 — Old Man Ascends. It is a small language-learning game, embedded right here on the page. Play it below.

Best with sound on. Click 🎤 to say a word, or just type it. Open the 洞府 · Voice Hall in the corner to create a room and cultivate with others.

The Idea

I wanted something that sat at the intersection of three things I keep coming back to: life-simulation games, language learning, and the quiet fantasy of starting over from the very end.

The Arc: From a Hundred Years Old to Young Again

The story is deliberately shaped like the cultivation ladder from 凡人修仙传, compressed into seven episodes. Each one is unlocked by a single word:

  1. 修仙 (xiū xiān) — an old man decides he will cultivate immortality.
  2. 灵根 (líng gēn) — he discovers, impossibly late, that he has a spirit root.
  3. 筑基 (zhù jī) — Foundation Establishment; his old bones begin to strengthen.
  4. 金丹 (jīn dān) — the Golden Core, and centuries added to his life.
  5. 元婴 (yuán yīng) — the Nascent Soul, a second life.
  6. 渡劫 (dù jié) — crossing the heavenly tribulation in thunder and fire.
  7. 洗灵根 (xǐ líng gēn) — he washes his spirit root clean in a spirit spring and sheds five hundred years.

And that is the ending the game is really built around: the man who started at one hundred, half-blind and trembling, opens his eyes as a youth again — 返老还童 — reborn at the threshold of godhood. The wheel turns, and the path begins anew.

How the Language Layer Works

Two ways to unlock every episode, because learners are different:

Every card shows the characters, the pinyin, and the English meaning up front — this is a game for learning the words, not for gatekeeping people who do not know them yet.

The Social Layer

The 洞府 · Voice Hall in the corner is the multiplayer scaffold:

Point the room-join calls at an Agora channel or a Zoom session and the same UI becomes a genuine shared study room: everyone in the room hears everyone else, and everyone is racing to pronounce the next breakthrough word correctly.

Why an Old Man

Because the most interesting version of “it is too late for me” is the one where it turns out not to be. A hundred-year-old carpenter is the least likely immortal in any 修仙 story — and that is exactly why watching him wash his spirit root clean and walk out young again is worth learning seven words for.

道友,请。 Break through.
