Apple M1
Apple M1 is a new ARM-based SoC that Apple has released. It is better than the previous versions because it is more energy-efficient and has better performance for specific purposes. For example, it is very well optimized for video editing, making it a good choice for video creators. While it may be less compatible with some software programs, the benefits of M1 outweigh this downside. If you are looking for a high-quality computer that will provide good value for your money, then M1 should be at the top of your list.
I will go over what these points mean in detail.
First, M1 is more responsive.
M-series CPU is a new architecture that Apple builds for its users to have better experiences. It features an SoC(System-on-Chip) design.
If I were to explain what this SoC means to my parents in China, who don’t know much about computers, I would say they are like the Forbidden City in China. A smaller but self-contained place with all essential functions close to each other.
On the one hand, you cannot add additional hardware inside; The manufacturing factories lock everything in when Apple manufactures them.
On the other hand, you can get a significantly faster experience with the core features.
Apple can use M-series CPU on MacBook, iMac, iPad, which means you get a consistent experience across all computers.
Second, M1 is more energy-efficient.
With the electricity and gas prices going up globally, this would translate to significant savings down the line. It is also suitable for the environment because of the CO2 reduction it could provide.
To put it in numbers, Mac Mini M1(2020) uses 39w power at the peak and 6.8w when idle. Mac Mini Intel(2018) uses 122w power at the peak and 19.9w when idle.
If you are into video content creation, then M1 is built for this purpose from a tech perspective. It is because Apple can do the end-to-end optimization since Apple owns both software(Final Cut Pro) and the hardware, The 8GB basic version should already help you achieve your video content creation goal if you are new to this area.
My definition of new to this area is that you have a full-time job and video creation is the first thing you do after work or on the weekend.
It is beneficial because you don’t have much time for video content creation. Video editing and rendering can be time-consuming. Any time saved would be your time with your family or friends.
Third, M1 is quieter.
I’m pretty sensitive to noise, and I don’t want to wear noise-canceling headphones all the time.
After using the M1 Mac Mini for almost a year, it is safe to say that I enjoy my fan-noise-free environment. As a comparison, The fan noise was pretty standard with my previous computers. The experience with a loud fan running close to you wasn’t pleasant.
Key risks mitigation:
- If you do coding for a living, I would only recommend M1 with 16GB memory or more.
Previously I owned a Mac Mini M1 8GB version. However, it couldn’t keep up with my workflow development with IntelliJ IDE and a dozen tabs open in Chrome. I thought I could get away with a cheaper 8GB version as I was doing lightweight development(No Dockers etc.). No, I couldn’t. Don’t be like me.
2. If you use specific software, then it’s better to check if they have M1 or Universal Build. Otherwise, you might have software compatibility issues, especially with the Intel-optimized ones. At this point, most of the development-related tools have been migrated to support M1.
3. If you read my article today, you might also have options like the M1 Pro or M1 Max. Apple uses them in laptop series like MacBook Pro 14 or 16 inches.
I already have more than one laptop, and I don’t see the benefits of switching unless you need more memory, like 32GB or more.
M1 from 2020 should still be good enough for the purpose mentioned.
4. If you happen to be blocked by a non-responsive mouse, which means you can move your mouse, but clicking doesn’t register. You can use your keyboard to restart. I use Alfred’s shortcut to help me with this.
